Web Trends 2012 Talk by Jovani Wayne Ogaya

A presentation for a group of students in Aldersgate College Solano, Nueva Vizcaya during their I.T week.

I was given another opportunity to share and pass on some of my knowledge to a set of actively participating and aspiring young I.T. students this morning and afternoon, February 22, 2012.

To the participants, thank you all and always remember that everyone of us will gonna contribute and make changes to our society for the betterment by honing and using our set of skills.

Everyone is capable to learn. I won’t suggest that you continuously study and learn something new day by day. It’s up to you, but if you do, you learn new things every day, you will gonna improve, you will gonna have set of skills that you may use in the future, and if you do have the right set of skills it is easier for you to be hired, or it will be easier for you to create something new and put up your own business or venture.

Importance Of Optimizing Your Code for Dummies

For better performance, you should consider in your plan – how to optimize your codes. There are important factors to consider especially when developing an online or web application. You have to consider the loading time, processing time, memory allocation or usage, database access and process, and some other factors.

Listed below are some or few of the things you should consider when coding or developing an application either for web, stand-alone or networked:

Design your loops in an efficient way. Do not do too many loops in one process. As much as you can, always try for simple alternatives in your complex loops.
Consider the memory your codes may use. Especially when dealing with arrays and parsing large csv or xml files. When ever you can, try to free up the memory in one loop or recursion during the parsing process. Do not store large data in an array and do not use too many variables with large values.
Use functions. As much as you can, research for build-in functions your programming language have. If in case a special process requires you to create your own code, use functions and do not do procedural approach.
Create Classes and use them. Research on how to create classes that you can use in your application. Creating and using classes makes your codes reusable and extendable. Once you have a logic for a certain task or tasks, you can group together related functions in one class. These functions will now be the methods of you class which you can easily use over different parts of your application.
Consider MVC or Model View Controller architecture. Model View Controller (MVC) pattern creates applications that separate the different aspects of the application (input logic, business logic, and UI logic), while providing a loose coupling between these elements.

These are just few things to keep in mind whenever you are creating or developing your application. For more information, you can google the important keywords you find I mentioned above.

If you want to trim spaces or newline of a field value, you can use the normalize-space() function.

for example:

you have a field Summary in a certain table and one row has a value of

Maximum heat with minimal effort

and you wanted to display the word “Maximum heat with minimal effort” text only. First you need to eliminate the h1 tag and its content and get or extract the text after the h1 tag which is the ”Maximum heat with minimal effort”.

To do so, you may use substring-after() function.

substring-after(Summary,'</h1>')

</h1> is simply the equivalent of  tag.

This tells the xsl to get the string after the tag.

Normally, there is a newline after the and it causes the text “Maximum heat with minimal effort” to display on the second line with an empty space above it, so we have to trim it to remove the extra space or newline.

you can use the normalize-space function as shown below.

Web Trends 2011 Talk by Jovani Wayne Ogaya

This is my presentation for a seminar held at IFSU – Ifugao State University, Nayon Ifugao last July 28, 2011. There are about more than a hundred participants, mostly computer students of IFSU.

The presentation went well. The participants are actively listening and participating during the event. They are eager to learn new things, specially trends of today.

It was a very rewarding experience. I am glad that I was able to share new things to the students. I am positive enough that through seminars, talks or conferences, the IT community of the Northern Philippines will grow bigger and actively participate in any IT events that may arrive in the coming years. I also positively believe that through IT, we can contribute a lot to our community, the government, and the country.
